Habitat for Humanity Women Build
Giving back to our community is a top priority for us, which is why we were honored to work on this project for Habitat for Humanity. This project was extra special because it is a house that women built. We designed a warm and comfortable family home while working within the constraints of a limited budget and a small floor plan to be built by female volunteers with minimal construction training and skills. We are proud to say that despite these challenges we were able to address the fundamental problems of space, proportion, light and materials with ease.
Taking design inspiration from the Low Country Cottage style, we added a big front porch for shade that at the same time creates the outdoor living and entertaining space that LowCountry families enjoy so much. The inside layout is based around a great room for versatility with a lovely vaulted ceiling achieved through the use of a scissor truss at an additional cost of only $100. The owner is able to comfortably accommodate large gatherings of family and friends as well as her three growing sons. The master bedroom contains a large walk-in closet that recognizes the need for adequate storage space while simultaneously conveying a sense of luxury; a first for a Women Build project and much appreciated by its owner.
