For this design project, we needed to add additional workout space, new locker rooms, and a new daycare space for an existing YMCA building. The key architectural challenge was creating the best possible configuration of interior space when the existing circulation had all levels connected by a ramp.
We answered the challenge by creating two new wings; one wing containing the fitness space on the upper floor with changing facilities on the lower floor, and the other wing accommodating studio space on its upper level and a children’s play area on the lower level. The design intention of this unique feature was to provide interaction through interconnecting views across the entrance from the upper levels of these new wings. This, along with the desk sign-in, ramps, circuit training and new fitness areas, give the entire building a feeling of energy and constant motion due to the sense of continuous change experienced by the participant.
