Swallowtail Architecture is honored to have created the architectural design for the new Dorchester Heritage Center for Dorchester County, SC. The design includes a 20,000 sq. ft. building with over 6,500 sq. ft. of dedicated exhibition space that will be used to highlight the history of the County. The Heritage Center has three main components: a museum, the county archives, and an event space. The museum will showcase artifacts that celebrate Dorchester’s rural character in support of their mission, “Preserving Today for Tomorrow.” The archives will allow residents and scholars to research the counties deep roots in the Greater Charleston area, as well as conduct genealogical research. And the event space will be available to host many kinds of events including cocktail parties, weddings, and educational activities.

The Heritage Center is envisioned as a multi-generational gathering space. Situated on a large parcel of land only 10 minutes north of Summerville, SC, the site layout and planning is being completed by Design Works and principal, Scott Walker. The land for the center was specifically selected to reflect the overall character of Dorchester County–rurally-sited with natural features like a wetland and marsh. The Center grounds also includes a small, family gravesite. The Dorchester Library will be a companion facility on the same property.
