Marsh Front Home on the Intracoastal Waterway of Sullivan’s Island
By great good fortune, our client bought a marsh front lot on Sullivan’s Island. Her vision was to build a small comfortable home with a future mother-in-law cottage accommodated in the design in an un-built separate wing that would connect to the main home via the screened porch. The home would be a calm retreat from the city, perfect for rejuvenation through watching the changing seasons on the marsh. She wanted to have all of the principal rooms on the view. We designed a home perfectly-sized with very little floor area lost to corridors. This allowed the rooms to be as large as possible. In addition, the variety of exterior spaces extends the living spaces to the outdoors making the home feel large. All of the main rooms including the master bedroom, living room, kitchen, and dining room are filled every day with marsh views. The screened porch and deck also have amazing views to the Intra Coastal Waterway.
Although the budget was tight, as a design professional herself, our client was confident that she could select interior finishes and products that would show very well within her budget. She wanted her home to have a timeless feel to it, incorporating beautiful fixtures and clean lines on the interior. The interior and exterior selections give the home a timeless classic feel of luxury, while integrating seamlessly into the beautiful landscape.
“Thanks you for all you have done to design and create my dream home. Your part in my journey has been so important and a key to the success.” The Client
To meet our clients requirement to design and build her home as quickly as possible, we decided to avoid the requirement for special approval by the design board–as that would extend the design process. Swallowtail was able to design the home to fully comply with 100% of all of Sullivan’s zoning bylaws without requiring any additional relief, thus eliminating the requirement for review and approval by the design review board.
